How to Perform Pitru Tarpana at Tungabhadra River Mantralayam

Mantralayam, located on the banks of the holy Tungabhadra River in Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in South India. The town is famous for the Raghavendra Swami Mutt and is considered exceptionally powerful for performing ancestral rituals such as Pitru Tarpana. Pitru Tarpana is a sacred Hindu rite performed to offer water and sesame seeds to departed ancestors, seeking their blessings and helping their souls attain peace and liberation. Performing this ritual at the Tungabhadra River in Mantralayam is believed to multiply its spiritual merits manifold due to the divine energy of the place. To begin the ritual, devotees should ideally arrive at the river ghats early in the morning, preferably during Brahma Muhurta, which is approximately 90 minutes before sunrise. Before entering the river, take a purifying bath and wear clean, traditional clothing. Men typically wear a dhoti and should remove their shirt, while women wear a saree. Recite the Pitru Tarpana mantras, which invoke the names of your departed ancestors going back three generations on both the paternal and maternal sides. The standard mantra includes the gotra name, the name of the ancestor, and the offering phrase. Offer the water mixed with sesame seeds by cupping your hands and allowing the water to flow out through the base of your thumb, which is known as the Pitru Tirtha. The ritual typically honors ancestors including father, paternal grandfather, paternal great-grandfather, mother, maternal grandfather, and maternal great-grandmother at a minimum. After completing the Tarpana, exit the river and dry yourself, then visit the Raghavendra Swami Mutt for darshan and blessings, which adds immense spiritual value to your pilgrimage. Make a donation to the temple or feed Brahmins as part of the ritual completion. The most auspicious days to perform Pitru Tarpana at Mantralayam include Amavasya which is the new moon day, Mahalaya Amavasya during the Pitru Paksha fortnight, solar and lunar eclipses, and on the death anniversary of your ancestors known as Shraaddha Tithi. Pitru Paksha, the 16-day lunar period in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, is considered the most powerful time for ancestral rituals. During this period, the Tungabhadra ghats at Mantralayam are filled with thousands of devotees from across India performing Tarpana and Shraaddha ceremonies. The Mantralayam temple administration and local priests are well organized during this period to assist pilgrims. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance if you plan to visit during Pitru Paksha as the town becomes very crowded.
